About Us

TFAL explores the nuanced experiences of Filipinos in the United States, atbp

Show Hosts

Joseph Bernardo

Host

Joe is a 2nd generation Filipino American born in Los Angeles and raised in the San Fernando Valley. He currently works at a local university in LA and is involved with various organizations/campaigns that support the Asian American community. He holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of Washington and wrote his dissertation on the history of Filipino Americans in Southern California. In his spare time, Joe likes to read nerdy academic books, play basketball, practice kali and yoga, and dance the Todo Todo. He lives in Northridge with his eye-rolling partner, Gerlie.

Ryan Carpio

Host

Ryan was born in Manila, Philippines and immigrated to the United States when he was 7 years old. He grew up in Los Angeles and currently works for the City of LA. He’s a Loyola High School and UC Berkeley alum. On his free time, he likes to sing, teach, play cards, and laugh. On his non-free time, he likes to talk politics, connect people, cook, do daily crossword puzzles, and ponder life’s mysteries. He enjoys good food, short walks on the beach and is a Taurus.

Elaine Dolalas

Host

Elaine is a Historic Filipinotown-based writer, podcaster, and independent curator. She curates Color Your Troubles Away, a monthly arts event that offers stress relief, healing, and meditation through coloring. Elaine is happily trying to figure out the secret of life through writing, volunteering, and most importantly avoiding cleaning her room, much to her husband TFAL producer Mike’s chagrin. Her essays, podcasts, and CYTA events can be found at ObliviousNerdGirl.com.

Michael Nailat

Host/Producer

Michael, aka waxstyles, is definitely 100% Filipino American, although his facial hair tends to confuse folks for some reason. Born and raised in Oxnard, educated at UC Irvine and USC, it’s no wonder he ended up becoming a DJ (but not a racer or breakdancer for some reason). By day he crunches data on homelessness for the United Way, fixes computers for the Pilipino Workers Center, and helps guide Sessions LA, a DJ and music production program for youth. Whenever he happens to be free, he collects records, laserdics, and vintage electronics. He is also a budding off-road enthusiast. He is currently camped out with his exponentially more interesting life partner Elaine in Historic Filipinotown.
